‘Ernie Turner’ was built by John Forshaw in 1988 and spend it’s life at the Ness Island Railway in Inverness before arriving at the BMR in November 2010. The locomotive is one the Mainstays of the BMR steam services since she arrived and has proved a powerful and useful engine. The locomotive is finished in a maroon livery.
This locomotive arrived at the BMR in April 2011 and it was previously at the Lenham Miniature Railway in Kent and before that at the Belton Light Railway in Lincolnshire. The Locomotive was built by Mardyke Miniature Railways in 1979 with a 5hp petrol engine and in 2012 she was completely rebuilt with 2 x 6.5hp petrol engines making it the only twin engine miniature locomotive in the country. ‘RHF’ often works the BMR diesel passenger services. 55019 is finished in the Blue livery of 1970’s British Rail. The full sized 55019 is preserved under the ownership of the Deltic Preservation Society and can be seen in action on preserved railways and on mainline charter trains.
Class 35 ‘Hymek’ D7096
D7096 was the first locomotive to arrive on the BMR in 2010 and is an 11hp Diesel-Hydraulic. The Locomotive was built By Mardyke Miniature Railways in 1992 with a 5hp petrol engine in it and first ran at the Grand Chigwell Railway in Essex. In 2008 it was rebuilt as a diesel-hydraulic and gave it the same transmission as the full size Hymek, hence it gained the unofficial nickname ‘Minimek’. The locomotive has handled the brunt of the passenger trains and the works trains over the past few years. D7096 carries the two tone green livery of 1960’s British Railways. The Real D7096 was scrapped in 1986 and many parts for it including it’s engine were used to keep it’s class mate D7076 operational on preserved railways.
Class 47 47548 ‘The Silcock Express’
This locomotive is another Mardyke Built diesel-hydraulic. It was built for the Ness Island Railway, Inverness in 1992 and was finished appropriately in Scotrail colours. In 2002 it was sold to the Bolebroke Castle and Lakes Railway in Sussex and overhauled. It remained there until June 2013 until it was purchased by the Barnards Miniature Railway. She carries the 1980’s style Large logo blue and is powered by the same Kubota Z482 engine as in the ‘Hymek’. The Class 47’s were a standard British Rail design Introduced in 1961 and over 500 were built and are still in active service today albeit in small numbers.
Class 47 47512
This locomotive is the twin sister to 47548, It was built at Mardykes in 1992 and was delivered new to the Swanley New Barn Railway in Kent. It carried standard Intercity livery and it ran there until 2007 were it then withdrawn a life expired and put into storage. After it was withdrawn a start was made to overhaul the locomotive and the bodywork was repaired and repainted into EWS (English, Welsh and Scottish) Railway maroon. The mechanical overhaul never took place and many of the components were removed. She was Purchased for use at Barnards Farm In August 2014 and is currently in line for it’s mechanical overhaul.
Isabel was built in 2004 in Lincolnshire by Eric Walker . Initially built as an 0-4-2 saddle tank she was almost immediately converted to an 0-4-0 plus tender . She is not based on any prototype but has a lot of 'Bagnall' about her , including a marine style boiler.She spent six years based in Kent with regular trips to the Swanley New Barn Railway . Also excursions to Staffs, Lancs , Surrey and even Perthshire . Based at Barnards Farm for the last two years , she is currently dismantled for her ten year overhaul and may well emerge from the workshops restored to her original 0-4-2 configuration and in a new livery.
Class 55 'Deltic' 55009 'Alycidon'
This locomotive arrived on the railway during 2015 from the Ridgeway Light Railway in Chingford, North London. It was built in 1984 by Mardyke Railway and was powered by a small Honda engine powering the leading bogie. The locomotive was then made redundant in 2014 and was then put up for tender the following year. When the locomotive was at Chingford is was given the fictious name of Mayfly, When it arrived at Barnards it received the proper deltic name 'Alycidon'. The locomotive is currently not working and is awaiting its line in the overhaul queue.
0-4-2T Tinkerbell Class ‘Joan’
‘Joan’ Was Built in 2014 by Peter Beevers in Sidcup, Kent. She is an adaption of the popular ‘Tinkerbell’ class locomotive designed by Roger Marsh in the 1970’s. The locomotive carries plain green livery and is powerful enough to handle the heavy BMR service trains alone.
British Railways class 9F 92203 'Black Prince'
This locomotive was Built in 1980 by J Clark of North wales and originally lived at the Benfleet miniature railway, then moved to Barleylands and then to Barnards in 2016, so has spent all it's working life in Essex!
It is a scale working model of the Mighty freight locomotive known simply as the 9f these ran all over the national network in the 1950's and 1960s hauling oil and coal trains, as well as the odd passenger train. They are classed as a modern steam locomotive!
The real 'Black Prince' survives to this day and is owned by wildlife aritist David Shepherd, can be seen running on the North Norfolk railway.

Britannia class 7MT 70000 'Britannia'
Britannia class 7MT 70000 'Britannia' was built by J clark in 1981 in North Wales and like 'Black Prince' it is a modern British Railways locomotive from the 1950's and 1960's.
The working model also shares the same history as 'Black Prince' going from Benfleet to Barleylands to Barnards...
The real Britannia locomotives ran fast freight and passenger trains all over the BR network until 1968 when the diesels took over their duties.
The real 70000 survives today and runs special trains all over the country on the main lines.... maybe one day we will see it pass Barnards!
Thomas II class 0-4-2 'Christabelle E Holmes'
Thomas II class 0-4-2 'Christabelle E Holmes' was built in 1988 by John Forshaw and it the Sister to Ernie Turner our Maroon Thomas II. She has previously worked at Pecorama in Devon, Hollybush Garden Centre in Staffordshire and Weston Park, it used to be Called Samuel Whitbread.
Large Stafford Class 0-6-0ST 'Sally Anne'
Sally Anne was built in 2016 at Station Road Steam in Lincolnshire, She is a beeft up version of the little engine we had a Barnards Farm called 'Davanna' She is finished in lined black livery and is capable of hauling the heaviest BMR passenger trains.
Exmoor 0-4-2T 'Doris Hilburn'
'Doris Hilburn' Was built in 2004 by Exmoor Locomotive works, Bratton Fleming in Devon for the Sutton Valance Highland Railway in Kent and was named Audrey. In 2016 she moved to Barnards Farm as we needed another large engine for the Angel Green Line, She now carries the name Doris Hilburn.
Works Shunter 'Dereck' 0-4-0
Dereck was brought in to work on our maintenance trains as the Mardyke diesels were getting a bit battered on these duties and would look tired in the spring when it came to pulling the passenger trains. Dereck is a bit of a unsung hero often seen with the Ballast wagons. He came form Barleylands in Essex in 2016 but was built in 2006 by Roanoke. The only time you will see Dereck pulling a passenger train is at one of our diesel gala weekends!
2-BEL 'Barnards Belle' Pullman EMU.
The Barnards Belle is Based upon the famous Brighton Belle Electric train that ran between London and Brighton from the 1930's to the 1970's. Our Version came from the Ridgeway Light Railway in 2015 and was known as the 'Chingford Belle'. You can actually ride inside this unit giving a different viewing perspective of the gardens.
